We finally got some nice weather here in Misery to coincide with the
weekend
so I went out to the farm yesterday and got some good therapy. Dad and
I spent
some time cleaning out the barn and organizing some of our recently
acquired
treasures, then moved the MM M670 Super inside and started tearing it
down.

That one was purchased with the assumption that the rear head was
cracked.
It was weeping coolant from the #4 exhaust port and sucking coolant into
the
crankcase when running. After getting the hood off and some light on
the subject
it was apparent that the rear head had been replaced at some time in the
past.
Got the manifolds off with no difficulty and other than some slight
damage at the
outlet of the exhaust neck, both manifolds are in pretty good shape.
The rear
head was much easier to remove than I expected it to be. It looks like
the
coolant leakage was from the head gasket. There are no visual
indications of
the head being cracked. The front head was a real nuisance to remove
but a
liberal application of profanity accompanied by much hammering and
prying
finally got the job done. Everything looks good there too. I've got
both heads
in the truck and will drop them off at the machine shop over lunch today
to
have them cleaned up, checked out and repaired if necessary.

The M5 wouldn't start after Dad used it to move some big round bales a
couple
weeks back so we checked out the usual suspects. There wasn't any fire
across the points, which really surprised me because they were replaced
last
summer. I cleaned up the contacts and was able to get it running again,
but
no amount of fussing over the points would make it clean out and run
straight.
Decided to solve the problem permanently by replacing the breaker set
with
a Pertronix solid state pickup. I put one of those in the VAC a couple
years
ago and have been very pleased with the reliability.

With any kind of good luck the heads will be done and the ignition parts
will
be here by next weekend so we can get those two put back together. Next
up after that is the Franken-Mo project.

It sure was nice to get out of the house for a change...
