Thanks for the information on the tappet oiling on the John Deere A's. My
dad always told me that the pipe was an air breather pipe. I have seen the
old A's apart for putting in new rings, but my memory has faded on how it
looked.

On Dave and Robert's A, serial number 487153, the tappets are oiled with the
tube from the govenor to the tappet cover. Starting with serial number
488000 the tappets were oiled with a line from the block inside the tappet
cover. On the earlier system like Dave and Roberts, the oil comes from the
filter, up to the governor housing and squirts out of a hole inside the
governor housing onto the fan gears which spash the oil all around inside
the housing. There is a trough cast into the inside front of the governor
housing which collects oil to send down the tube to the top of the tappet
cover where it is dripped into another trough inside the tappet cover that
drips oil onto each rocker arm. There could be an obstruction in the
governor housing either where oil is sprayed onto the gears, or where the
trough drains into the oil tube to the tappet cover. Both of these holes
are fairly small. Try taking the tube off of the governor and stick a wire
into the hole in the governor housing. Oil should drip steadily through the
tube, the tappet cover does not need to be installed for oil to come out the
tube.
