[AT] The noise; the noise; the noise, noise, noise!

If you really want to have fun with the neighbors, set up a carbide
cannon to automatically fire about every five minutes all day long. We
lived about two miles from a truck gardener when I was growing up on the
farm. He had tremendous problems keeping birds away from his
strawberries and other berry fruits, so he set up the cannon to fire
from pre-dawn to dusk every day. Even as far away as we were from it,
it still jolted us every time it fired.

That experience prepared me for living just a block from the elevated
train on Chicago's south side. A passing train at full speed is about
120 Db -- close to the threshold of pain. In a couple of days, I got
used to the noise and got to the point that I couldn't sleep when I went
back home to the farm because it was too quiet.

Thanks to everyone that replied! It was nice to have my thoughts and
feelings about this complaining neighbor validated by a great group of
like-minded individuals. Some of your thoughts on the subject are
priceless
and others are just great strategic counter-moves.
I only look at email in the PM after I get back in the house from doing
whatever around the place and I must say that the number of replies
written
today on the subject just floored me. We all love our old iron,
especially
if it has an engine, and probably all of us will cut the other guy some
slack without asking. My neighbor will get the same consideration I
have
always given him, but I am not going to stop doing anything because of
him.
I will try not to do things to aggravate him even more, but probably
will
because his viewpoint is so far removed from my own I cannot begin to
understand his feelings. I suppose if a FOR SALE sign goes up on his
house
in the nest few weeks I will not be surprised, nor sad.
We find it interesting that nearly all of the new neighbors here are
"workers". They all enjoy mowing their own grass, having gardens,
boiling
sap as well as fixing and building things. Heck, one of them even has
two
JD crawlers, dumptrucks and an airplane. This one does not and should
move
to a fancy suburb and do nothing, like they all tend to who live their
lives
in them. I was sort of considered weird in our old suburban
neighborhood,
having a tractor in the garage and grease under my nails. Looked a long
time for this place and have never regretted the move.
Thanks everyone for the words and thoughts.
