Serial Number 306600 is a late model year 1952 B. Since there were only late
1952 model year 60's, but no production 1952 model year 50's, there is a
good chance that the 60 was built before or at about the same time as this
ser # B. And therefore my assumption would be that the transition from white
to black gauges was occurring simultaneously on all model tractor production
lines. 

Since the G production ran even longer, into 1953, I checked what JR has to
say about the colors on these gauges. "Before ser # G-60700, it virtually
certain that the gauges were the "white face" version, After this serial
number, it appears that either "white face" or black face" gauges were used,
depending on what was on hand on any given day." 

I think if we found out the build dates of Serial # 306600 B, your Dad's 60,
and serial #G-60700 they probably were all built about the same time. This
serial number G is also a late 1952 model year tractor.

JR doesn't mention anything about the model 60 gauge color in his "Early
Numbered Series Book"

So the bottom line:

JD quit buying white faced gauges and started buying black faced gauges some
time in both calendar and production year 1952 and switched to black faced
gauges on all production lines as the inventory ran out. Probably a little
haphazardly. I suspect they did try to install all three gauges of the same
color on any given tractor but I don't know that for a fact. I wonder what
they did when they got to the last ones and they didn't come out even?  I
also wonder if any of the white faced gauges got put into parts sales at the
time. Since I was 12 years old then I just don't understand why that wasn't
important to me at the time!  :-) New tractors were not present on our farm
in 1952!

This is interesting due to Dad's early 63 model 60 had white gauges on
it, and they seem to be original... Wonder if they were just using up
the stock before switching....

According to JD Hobbs book on the "Styled Letter Series" the B gauges
were
white until serial number 306600 "when it appears that black faced
gauges
were phased in". Ser # 306600 is a late model 1952 B. 

I interpret JR's wording in the statement to be a little bit of a hedge
since there may not have been a clear cutoff and for a period of time it
might have been the luck of the inventory draw as to which version was
used.
I may be incorrectly reading between the lines. If your B is close to
that
serial # I suspect the "correct police" will probably be a bit lenient.
:-)
And if they are not, I think it would be reasonable for them to be
expected
to volunteer to replace the gauges for you at their expense! :-)

guages
