[AJD] 35 D Runs Again!, but

Gary,
I'm surprised you didn't have the block and head mag'd when torn down,
since you weren't sure of the engine's history. I made the same
mistake on my first tractor, never even occured to me to pull the block
and have it checked. But you had the head off and pistons out. To me,
there is no way a large crack like that in the cylinder area could have
escaped your honing process. Similarly, I don't think you could have
missed that large of a crack in the head when you had it taken off. I
would take off the manifold (if possible) and try to see if the crack
is evident inside the intake or exhaust ports. I have been told that
the area between the exhaust valves is pretty thin and vulnerable to
cracking. I have to track down a very similar leak on my D (have to
button up the H before tearing anything else apart!). It doesn't sound
like you used a new head gasket? I wouldn't reuse a head gasket if I
had a choice. But even if the gasket is new, you do have to retorque
the head/gasket once the engine has warmed up and cooled down, but it
sounds like you only let it warm up the first time after firing......
I'd tear it back down and mag the block and head, that way you have
peace of mind.
Steve
