[AJD] 'A' Backfire

We just finished a complete overhaul of our 1939 A.  Today we were using
the tractor and had to start and shut it off several times.  Each time we
started it, it would take about ten turns with no putt and then finally it
would start with a HUGE backfire and then run.  We were thinking that the
timing on the magneto must need to be retarded or advanced slightly.  Does
anyone know which?  Also, what way does the mag need to be turned to
correct the problem?
