[Steam-engine] Nichols 'D' valve

Yes, the Steam should hold the valve to the seat. It should be free to move 
away in the event water gets into the cylinder. You can hear them clicking 
if you close the throttle and allow the engine to coast. There should only 
be enough clearance between the valve and yoke to allow it to move in and 
out freely. I have only worked on Case and Minneapolis. On the Minnie there 
are clamps that slide on the valve rod so they are adjustable. On My Case I 
built up the valve block as it was worn some and trued up the prongs on the 
valve. If they are too loose it will cause a click at each end of the 
stroke. For optimum operation the valve and seat should be totaly Flat... 
The easiest way is to put that cylinder in your Bridgeport... The seats 
always seem to be worn concave and the valve convex... They will run Kinda 
OK this way as long as the valve matches the seat...
