One thing I NEVER do in a negotiation is insult a guys stuff.  If he wants
$1000 and I only think it is worth $600 here is what I say:

Sir, I'm sure the widet is worth every penny of the $1000 you want but I
just can't afford to put that much in it.  I don't want to insult you but if
you decide you want to take $600 for it let me know and if you don't then no
hard feelings.  That gives the guy an out and still allows me to make my
offer.  If he wants to negotiate I have put the ball back in his hands.  If
he doesn't I can walk away without him being mad at me.

Life is too short to insult someone just to save a few bucks.
