Here's a trick which has worked for me a number of times over the years.

Use a ball, from a bearing or whatever which is a bit larger than the hole 
put it in the hole and hit it a couple of sharp taps with a ball pien hammer if 
you do it just right, there won't even be the need to re-tap.

Harder whacks will close up a malleable hole a lot, and to a surprising depth 
as well enough to require re-drilling to open it up.

If the fitting hole is in a location where gravity wants to make it drop, 
just stick it in place with a dab of grease before you whack it.

WEAR SAFETY GLASSES (or  close one eye when you hit it like I sometimes do, 
so that if the hardened ball fractures and blows up, I'll at least have one eye 
left)

I have also used a punch to hold a hardened ball to reach restricted areas, 
where a direct hit wasn't possible.

I just countersunk the end of the punch in a lathe and then stuch the bearing 
ball to it.
