A grinding sound may be caused by a bad bearing. Opening the final drives is 
not that bad. You do need a hoist of some kind because they are heavy. If 
you decide to do it, let me know. I may be able to supply some pictures 
which might help.

I do not know what kind of compression tester I have. Duanes' comment about 
fitting the head on a GP is appropriate. I seem to recall I bought some 
adapters to allow connection from the head to the tester. Someone advertises 
adapters to allow use of modern plugs in the old heads in one of the 
magazines.

I have not been to the shop since my illness (about 3 months). I expect to 
be going soon if you want me to check on something.
