Cecil, yeah, like you said.  Best place, I think, is
the starter mounting bolt, followed by someplace on
the block or head.  I really like to use welding
cable, much higher current capacity than battery cable
and much more flexible and easier to work with.  I
like 1/0 for cars and light trucks and 2/0 for 6 volt
and any heavy equipment.  I also wrap areas prone to
wear with a piece of hose or convoluted loom.  I hate
shorts!!
While I'm thinking of it, crimped terminals are much
better than soldered.  This from experience and
factory trouble-shooters/seminar teachers.  A hammer
crimper is not terribly expensive and I've even
crimped with a vice and dull chisel.
