That sounds like a 9/2N.  Built from 1939 to 1947.  Either one would be a
dark battleship gray, often referred to early Ford gray.  Paint for early
Fergusons would be a very close match.

New Holland will sell you the wrong color.  They list the lighter gray for
8N as correct for all.

I think the original paint was navy surplus.
