George and all:
While I agree with your opinion on the Hot Line Guide, ( I once sold
them in my store) I do have one experience with them that I have yet to
get an explanation for.
The serial number listings they published for the Farmall 140 were more
accurate than anything else I have found. Info I had from someone who had
supposedly researched the archives and has written books ( Not Mr. Fay)
showed an ending serial number for the 140 production that was much earlier
than a 140 that was owned by a local equipment dealer. The researcher
justified his info by saying that Hot Line didn't know what they were
talking about and they shouldn't be trusted. When I contacted the folks at
Hot Line, they couldn't tell me where they got the info either because the
person who did those listings didn't work there anymore!
Either way the later serial number tractors existed and we later
confirmed when they were built though former IH plant employees who built them!
