[AT] plowing the garden

There is something about plowing that appeals to me and I had
a chance to spend an hour at it today. I bought the AC D-12 Series III
just before I left for the Midwest for the Le Sueur swap meet and had
not had a chance to play with it too much. It looked to me like the
single bottom plow I use on the garden would fit the D-12 just as well
as it fits the JD 40 so I hooked it up and gave it a try. I was quite
pleasantly surprised to find the D-12 did a lot better job of dealing
with the rocks in the garden than the JD 40. I guess the Allis is a
little heavier, has a little more power, a better and quicker governor
and ignores the rocks where the JD 40 stalls or spins or jumps to the
side. Anyhow, it was enjoyable and a nice cool but sunny day. I got the
garden plowed and it looks nice and I didn't break anything.

One thing I especially liked about the D-12 is that it has two
hydraulic control levers besides the one that lifts and lowers the
implement. One of these levers controls the Traction Booster which I
did not need but the other can be set to control the depth you plow
and just left where it is once set and every time you drop the plow
it goes back to the pre-set position. The JD can be made to do this too
- sort of, but depends on a stop on the control lever and only works
well if all the soil being plowed is the same consistency. Mine is not
so it doesn't work well at all. The setting on the Allis was not affected
by changes in soil or by being bumped by the rocks.

So I had a good tractor day today.

Cecil
