Dean make a jig to hold the rod that is just longer then it is then put a 1/4 
in. pin at one end. after you drill the first hole then you can put the vise 
with the jig in the drill press and slip the first hole over the pine then 
drill the second hole. This I think would be about the easiest way to do it. 
Another way is to make a jig with both holes in it and a clamp to hold the rod in 
place. Use a piece of channel iron turned up on the back edge to form a V to 
hold the round stock in place then put two 1/4 or larger plates across the ends 
for the drill guide holes. These should be strong enough so that the drill 
won't drift sideways and ruin the holes. and keep the drill bit very sharpe at 
all times.
