Ricky-

Have him run a hotwire from the battery straight to the coil, John
Deeres have a bypass starting system. What this means is that the
electrical system is 12v,
and has a 6v coil. There is a resistor in the line feeding the coil that
drops the voltage from 12v to 6v. When you push the button to start the
tractor, it is supposed to put a full 12v to the coil to help it start
better. could be that this bypass circuit is not working, or a problem
with the ignition switch. That is why i say run a temporary wire from
the battery to the coil and then try to start it. Also, make sure the
battery is well charged up, it is possible that while the battery will
crank the tractor, there may not be enough juice for the ignition system

Let us know how it goes.
