Now lets see, normal trans noise for a 50 year old tractor? Kinda hard to
establish a sound level there LeRoy, but if it shifts good and doesn't jump
out of gear , make a grinding noise engaging gears, a clunk while driving in
a gear (indicating a possible broken tooth), a high pitch sheaing noise like
a bearing going out etc, and when you drained the old oil you didn't find
any bronze or silver flaking in the old oil or chunks of gear in it I would
say a working trans that has been farming for awhile is going to have some
sound to it, but not nothing to worry about. All my 50 year tractors make
some gear noise, and if you have every driven truck trailer rigs that have
some age on them a little noise is just some grouns and pains of working
machinery .

Just how much transmission gear noise is normal? I hear some things but
nothing overly loud
or anything that sounds serious. I'm wondering if thats normal. Its on my
JD 40.
