[AT] RE: OT Craftsman Compressor

Something may not be lose, but it could be deflecting. I assume that the
crank mains are ball bearings, possibly the same ones that carry the motor
armature. I would try changing out those bearings.
Is there any end play in the motor? This can cause side thrust on the rods
and cause them to fail. Again, new bearings should help. Just because a
bearing is not binding doesn't mean it isn't worn. I have seen bearings
that rolled OK, but didn't run true and deflected under a load. We run
into this in the papermill fairly often, the bearing doesn't seem "too"
bad when you look at it and turn it by hand, but hooking up the vibration
equipment to it shows a problem at speed and under load.
Those compressors are noisy, but usually it is cylinder problems that kill
them. If a guy has limited use or is on a budget, they will serve you
good. Just depends on what your needs are and whether you are a tool
collector or a tractor collector!
What does the fracture on the broken rod look like? Is there any evidence
pointing towards a thrust or misalignment in a certain direction?
Joe
