Ricky: The lister (or buster) planter is used to go down to the moisture
for planting and yes, it seems if cultivating you will cover the crop.
However, you actually want to cover the crop to cover all the weeds. It
is done very slowly on the fist cultivation but subsequent cultivation
are much faster as the Milo/Corn/Cotton grows. There are fenders used on
cultivators sometimes to keep the dirt off the crops. The best
cultivators are the "rolling" type that use tines to tear and throw the
dirt. They are adjustable so as to throw lots of dirt or very little.
The "sword" type planter is used for planting mostly in the top of the
bed or on flat ground and is best if ample moisture is available because
the lister actually destroys a lot of moisture as it is used. It
(lister) is also use to go down beneath chemicals that were used
earlier, like Treflan on cotton ground because milo will not grow in
treflan. But if you get underneath it then no problem. Like when we have
a hail storm and eliminate a complete cotton crop we replant often with
milo.
