The adware programs can cause big problems. I fixed one of my co-worker's
systems simply by installing and running Ad-Aware. He could log into his
ISP and download/read email, but could not browse the net. After Ad-aware
did it's thing to 49 items of adware/spyware, everything was back to
forking as it should. He also runs Norton, but it wasn't finding adware.
Possibly an older version, but it was up to the current virus definitions.
I have Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and Pest Patrol loaded and
running on my home system. Every few days I will run Ad-Aware and possibly
one of the others. After Ad-Aware runs, the other two usually don't find
anything. Ad-Aware updates itself nearly every time I use it where the
other two rarely, if ever, update themselves (I do them all manually so I
can watch it). I think Ad-Aware is the cream of the bunch.
